Whoman reading in front of the Book shop. Mea She’arim quarter is home to the most ultra ortodox of Jews, some so extreme in their views that they do not recognise the modern State of Israel because it is not a theocracy. Here in a world unlike any other in Jerusalem, more reminiscent of the 19thcentury ghettos of Eastern Europe. Mea She’arim was one of the earlich Jewish quarter to be established in the extra-mural city and its construction commenced in 1874.
